As I post my first blog for area voices, I am at least two states and a time zone away from my community. I live in Prescott and work in River Falls. I run the St. Croix Valley Restorative Justice Program (SCVRJP) a local non-profit serving Pierce, St. Croix and surrounding communities. The SCVRJP mission is to promote a culture of peace and belonging utilizing restorative justice principles and programs in our community.
At this moment in time I am wearing a Community Preschool t-shirt. Today was a little walk-a-thon fund raiser for my 4 year-old nephew who goes to this preschool. The other families who attend Community Preschool have helped out my brother’s family. They have been taking turns and bring meals and donated food by 3 times a week for the last month! When I was on the phone with the walk-a-thon coordinator, I told her they really put the “C” in Community!
What does community mean to you?
In restorative justice we define it as a group of people with a common interest or in a common geography. People can rally around an arts community, a school community, communities of faith, just to name a few. We should never underestimate our ability to contribute and impact our own communities.
This blog will be offering experiences and insights regarding community and restorative justice. Look for stories and examples highlighting issues relevant to Restorative Justice, River Falls and community in general. For further background on St. Croix Valley Restorative Justice, see our website www.scvrjp.org.
